British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of our armed forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces conducted what it called a "major assault" on Daesh sites in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
