Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the right to contest certain calls from the official, mirroring the system currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
