Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
